How to practice rhythm on piano
Rhythm is the when of music. Chords tell you which notes to play; this trainer teaches you when those notes belong. Notation moves toward a fixed playhead. When a note reaches that line, you hear the attack — the same moment you would play it at the piano.
- Start in Watch & Listen. Follow quarter notes across the grand staff until the pulse feels obvious.
- Switch to Count With Me and say the syllables with the highlight: 1 2 3 4, then 1 & 2 & for eighths.
- Use Tap Rhythm to check your timing. Space works on desktop. Slow the BPM if taps land early or late — the written spacing stays the same.
Quarter notes, rests, and eighth notes
A quarter note lasts one beat in 4/4. A half note lasts two beats, a whole note four. A quarter rest is one beat of silence — just as important as a note. Eighth notes split a beat into two equal parts, counted “1 &”. Practice these values slowly, then raise the tempo without changing how the music looks.
