How to Play F7 on Piano

F7 is F major with one note added: Eb, the flat 7th. That makes it the most direct way to hear how a single note changes a chord's character from stable (F major) to restless (F7). F7 uses thumb-index-middle-pinky (1-2-3-5), giving all four chord tones their own finger.

Right-Hand Placement, Step by Step

F7 uses the 1 – 2 – 3 – 5 finger pattern in root position. Place each finger in order:

  3. 3Middle finger on C (5th)
  4. 5Pinky on Eb (Minor 7th)

Play It Separately, Then Together

  1. Press just F with your thumb and let it ring.
  2. Press just A with your index finger and let it ring.
  3. Press just C with your middle finger and let it ring.
  4. Press just Eb with your pinky and let it ring.
  5. Now press all 4 notes down together, at the same time, and listen for F7.
  6. Lift off and repeat the full chord slowly, aiming for an even, simultaneous attack.

Playing the notes separately first tells your ear what each one contributes before you ask your hand to place all of them at once. Both hands eventually play chords like this one — but there's no single correct left-hand shape for every song, so start by getting this right hand shape solid before adding a left-hand part of your own.

Common Mistake: Leaving your pinky parked on C

F major puts your pinky on C, the 5th. When F7 asks for a fourth note, Eb, it's tempting to reach for it with an extra finger while your pinky stays parked on C out of habit. Instead, let your middle finger take over C, freeing your pinky to move out to Eb — that's where it belongs in F7's 1-2-3-5 pattern.

Chord-Change Exercise: F7 to F Major

F7 and F major share three notes — F, A, and C — since F7 is just F major plus Eb. Practice F major to F7 and back: your thumb and index finger stay on F and A the whole time in both chords; only your middle and pinky fingers move, from F major's 1-2-5 to F7's 1-2-3-5.
